Build Bridges
Reflecting your community in your visitation can begin by building bridges with underrepresented communities. We recommend the following as building blocks of an engagement plan:
Identify leaders from these underrepresented communities and find a way to build (or rebuild) a relationship with them. Perhaps someone already connected to your site can be a liaison.
Like every relationship, start with respectful conversation and active listening. Listen to these and other stakeholders to better understand the barriers they face.
Assist with overcoming these challenges by offering special accommodations like custom interpretive programs or invitations to events.
Build a lasting relationship using ongoing dialogue, regular check-ins, and responsiveness to feedback.
They may say, “No thank you,” and that’s okay. Remember – respecting their decision to not participate builds trust. Your site may not be their cup of tea, but they may recommend your site to someone else.
